Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of optimizing web properties and content so it is more likely to be referenced, summarized, or cited by AI-powered search and answer engines. These systems generate responses using large language models rather than presenting a traditional list of search results.

There is significant overlap, and strong SEO fundamentals help with GEO. Modern SEO already accounts for things like structured data, content quality, entity authority, and topical relevance, and all of that carries over. The distinction is in the output being optimized for. SEO is about earning visibility in search results pages. GEO is about influencing and earning attribution in a generated answer, which requires thinking about how AI systems extract and verify information, not just how crawlers index and rank it. Answer-ready content structure, consistent entity references, and citation-worthy sourcing carry more weight in a GEO context than they typically do in a standard SEO program. How you measure is also different. Traditional rank tracking does not tell you whether you are appearing in AI-generated answers, which platforms are citing you, or how your brand is being represented in those responses. That requires a separate monitoring layer that most SEO reporting setups do not include.

AI-powered tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, and Perplexity are increasingly part of how buyers conduct early-stage research. Decision-makers use these platforms to get fast, synthesized answers to questions like "what software does X" or "who are the leading providers of Y." Brands that appear in those answers gain exposure before a prospect ever visits a website or fills out a form. That makes GEO particularly valuable in B2B contexts where buying cycles are long and awareness often determines which vendors make the shortlist.

AI recommendations are incredibly effective at guiding customer choices. By analyzing user behavior and preferences, AI suggests products, services, or content that align with their interests. GEO's impact on traffic is real but harder to isolate than paid or organic search. Some AI platforms pass referral data. Perplexity and ChatGPT, for example, do appear as referral sources in GA4 for sessions where a user clicks through. Others, particularly Google AI Overviews, often do not drive a separate click at all. Traffic influenced by AI citations can also surface as direct traffic or branded search lift, which makes attribution difficult. Measurement requires a combination of GA4 referral tracking, branded keyword monitoring in Google Search Console, and third-party AI visibility tools. GEO is not a short-cycle tactic. AI systems rely on crawled web content, third-party citations, and signals that accumulate over time. Changes to your content or site structure may take weeks or months to be reflected in how AI platforms reference your brand. The timeline is similar to SEO. Early indicators include tracking AI referral sessions in GA4, monitoring branded mentions in AI-generated answers using tools like Semrush AI Overviews tracking or Profound, and watching for changes in direct and branded search traffic.
